The 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup is underway and the tournament begins with Group A, this match sees defending champions and 5 time winners Mexico take on El Salvador ad Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Mexico is odds on favourites to repeat as winners of this tournament and with good reason, as they have returned another great squad of players that blossomed during the 2010 World Cup. Coach José Manuel de la Torre has been preparing his squad quite will with matches against Venezuela and Ecuador, which has seen many options that he can go with throughout the tournament. The key players on this team are Forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, Midfielder Andres Guardado and Defender Rafael Marquez, especially Hernandez who will be the lead man up front and will need to have a good partnership with either Giovani dos Santos or Pablo Barrera. The versatility of Marquez will also be important; his ability to play in both defense and midfield will help as the tournament goes forward.
As for El Salvador, they have proven to be a very tough team in CONCACAF over the years. They play a very physical style that is capable of unsettling teams and the fact that most of this team is based in the domestic league means they are very familiar with each other as well. Coach Rubén Israel has a young squad at his disposal and they are hungry to prove themselves on a major stage, however it probably would have been better preparation to play some teams outside of CONCACAF so that they can see different styles of play.
Mexico is clearly the favourite in this match and will want to send a message to the likes of USA, Canada and Jamaica that they are still the top dogs in this region, but El Salvador can and have proven to be a difficult side to deal with at times. I’m going with the UNDER in this match, I think Mexico can win this match without going into second gear and El Salvador will try to make this an ugly affair.
